Vendor Profile #10: Art School Dropout
Art School Dropout

Hi there! First things first: What's your name, where are you from, what's your business name, and where are you currently located?
My Name is Jessee Maloney, I'm from Maryland somewhere (we moved around so much during my childhood, yet we never left MD!). My business is Art School Dropout and I am currently located in Frederick, MD.

How did you get your start? Please tell us a little bit about how your business went from an idea to what is is today.
I didn't really have a plan when I started. I was taught to sew at a young age and I always had my own sewing machine. and about 5 years ago I made a tote bag for a friend with a drawing i had done, I posted it online and everyone seemed to love it.

one thing led to another and I started selling at a local shop in Baltimore, MD called 9th Life. After about 7 months of selling bags I accidentally came across all these great shops online that were basically doing the same thing as 9th Life. so I contacted a few and received a response from www.cutxpaste.com. after that i was contacted every so often to sell in even more shops.

during this time I bought a bunch of plastic flower beads and some wire to make my Mom a necklace. again, i posted them online and again had a good response.

and that is how my Juxtapose Necklaces were accidentally created. it forced me to actually look at what i was doing as more than a hobby so i jumped in and bought a domain and made a very simple HTML website... now its been 5 years and Art School Dropout is my main job, and I won't lie, most of my products are still orginally made b/c i wanted to give someone a gift.

What inspires you the most to create?
I'm very inspired by my family. were all very different. most of my products are made for my sisters who are very colorful and energetic.

What are your favorite materials to work with? Do you have a favorite color palette?
my favorite materials to work with... hmmm... well for about 75% of the year i really love casting plastic. it's very much like making Creepy Crawlers when i was a kid, I LOVED making creepy crawlers!
and I try not to let it show, but i really love making anything Teal. i always have to make sure i don't make too many teal items. i also really love neon colors. but only for business, in 'real life' i wear mostly black, brown and grey t-shirts with jeans. i guess i use my business as a color release.

Who are some of your favorite indie artist/crafters and why do you love them?
my first favorite Artist/Crafter would be Heidi of My Paper Crane (www.mypapercrane.com). i own so many of her plush toys i might be considered crazy. :) i just love how adorable they are, and who wouldn't want everyday objects with eyes looking at you everyday? seriously! and Heidi is just the nicest person imaginable.
my second favorite artists currently would have to be the duo that runs Little Friends of Printmaking (www.thelittlefriendsofprintmaking.com). everything they make is so colorful and looks very thought thorough. i have a bunch of their posters all over my walls. and i even put in a request for a custom tattoo by them, that's how much i love them!

Any exciting future plans or developments in the works for your business? (Nothing TOP-SECRET, of course!)
well, right now im actually taking things slower than normal. my husband and I are in the midst of trying to find our perfect home, so were in a very small space right now. im working out of our bedroom which is small to begin with. but once i have my workspace back, look out, ive got loads of ideas brewing in my head!!!

What are some other things you like to do when you are not busy making awesome stuff?
when i'm not working I'm usually hanging our with my husband and our friends. I also really love movies, video games and comic books. i guess my pastimes are very similar to a preteen boy.

What are the top 3 reasons someone shopping at the BBB 2008 should be sure to stop by your table?
hmmm, i think they should stop by my table b/c i have a great selection of accessories and jewelry that would make perfect gifts. my prices range from $2 to $40, and i make sure to have as many colors as possible to choose from to make it easier to find exactly what your looking for!

What is your favorite song or album to listen to while working?
currently the band i dont skip on my Ipod would be the Broadways.

Thanks Jesse! Make sure you head over at artschooldropout.net and check out her entire line of jewelry, embroidered pouches and wall plaques!
